3 Reasons Receiving Twitter DMs from Any Follower is Awesome

Direct Messages, one of Twitter’s oldest features, is about to get very interesting.  If you’ve checked your Twitter settings, you may have seen a new option pop up that allows you to receive Direct Messages (DMs) from anyone, even if they aren’t following you.  If you don’t see it yet, don’t worry, Twitter is rolling it out slowly. You may have caught our post last week about the Do’s and Don’ts of this new feature.

settings in twitter

I’m super excited about this change, so I wanted to write this post to highlight 3 reasons why this new setting is, in my opinion, very awesome for your business.

awesome blurb

1. People always assumed they could Direct Message you

That has been a problem since the start.  People assume they can DM you since Twitter is so inherently public, that when they try, two things happen.  The first is they can’t send the message. Then, adding insult to injury, they find out they can’t send the message because the recipient isn’t following them back. With this new change, if you turn on the setting, your customers can reach you with ease both publicly (through @mentioning you) but also privately, like a mini email.

2. Customer Support will be more seamless

@Mentioning is a great way to start a conversation, but sometimes it needs to be taken out of the public eye, especially if you’re talking about account sensitive stuff.  By turning this setting on for your company account you can converse both publicly and privately without any steps in between.

3. Marketing outreach will have less barriers

I am often reaching out to different people to let them know about cool things we are doing, and there are many times where I’d prefer to keep this correspondence private, which usually means getting ahold of an email address.  But if enough people turn on this feature, DM’ing will help replace the need for email outreach.  This is awesome!

But What About Spam?!?!

This option only works for Twitter followers; so it should be self-regulating. If one follower is being particularly spammy, it will still be possible to block while keeping this new DM setting on.

What Do You Think?

Will you be turning on this new feature for your business? How about your personal account?  I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments.  As soon as the option shows for me I will be turning on the setting on @tammykfennell, so DM me too!
